News: From A4 to A5, Audi’s Evolution is in the Fast Lane

After three decades at the heart of Audi's small executive lineup, the iconic A4 is being retired. But fear not—Audi isn't leaving its loyal fans without a worthy successor.

The A5, once known primarily for its sleek coupé and cabriolet versions, is stepping into the spotlight as Audi's new petrol-powered saloon (or lift back) for discerning professionals. This shift marks a significant change in Audi's lineup, aligning with their strategy to electrify their even-numbered models, leaving the odd-numbered ones to continue using traditional internal combustion engines (ICE).

Why the A4 Had to Go

The discontinuation of the A4 doesn’t spell the end of petrol power for Audi. Instead, it signals a strategic shift as the brand refines its lineup. While the A4 nameplate may be retired, its spirit lives on in the A5, which is set to carry the torch for Audi's petrol-powered saloons. The A5 is more than just a replacement—it's an evolution, bringing fresh design, cutting-edge technology, and a choice of engines that cater to a variety of driving preferences and budgets.

The New Audi A5: Power and Performance

The 2025 Audi A5 comes with a pair of turbocharged engines designed to please both performance enthusiasts and everyday drivers. The base model is equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that delivers 268 horsepower to all four wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The engine features variable turbine geometry, which enhances efficiency, though official fuel economy figures are yet to be confirmed.

For those who crave more power, the S5 variant offers a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 engine, producing 362 horsepower. This marks the first time Audi has paired this engine with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox in the S5, further enhancing its performance credentials. The Quattro all-wheel-drive system is also upgraded with a sport differential that includes torque vectoring, ensuring that the S5 delivers an engaging and dynamic driving experience.

Advanced Suspension and Steering

Audi has invested significant effort into refining the suspension and steering of the new A5 and S5 models. Drivers can opt for adaptive dampers, which allow for customisable ride comfort and handling, ensuring that the A5 can adapt to a variety of driving conditions and preferences.

A Global Perspective: Body Styles and Architecture

While the A5 and S5 will be available in a single saloon body style in the UK, other markets, including Europe, will have the option of an Avant (estate) version. However, there are no plans for a coupé or convertible variant in this new lineup. The A5 is also one of the first models to utilise Audi’s new Premium Platform Combustion architecture, which supports both front-wheel and all-wheel drive, as well as hybrid powertrains in addition to petrol engines.

A Bold New Look

The new A5 builds on the aesthetic appeal of its predecessor with a design that is both larger and more refined. The front end features a wide grille flanked by large air intakes, while the rear showcases authentic tailpipes, a detail that some other manufacturers have moved away from in recent years. LED daytime running lights and second-generation OLED taillights add to the car's visual appeal, with dynamic lighting effects offering up to eight customisable options.

Interior Innovations

Inside, the A5 is designed around four key pillars: ‘human-centric' design, a ‘Digital Stage’ for information and entertainment, ‘Material Driven Design’ for comfort, and ‘Visual Clarity’ for ease of use. The result is a spacious cabin with a longer wheelbase that provides ample room for passengers, even in the rear seats.

The Digital Stage setup is particularly noteworthy, featuring an 11.9-inch virtual cockpit display alongside a 14.5-inch MMI touch display. There’s even an optional 10.9-inch passenger display, allowing your co-pilot to navigate or watch streaming content without distracting the driver. For those seeking the ultimate audio experience, a Bang & Olufsen sound system with speakers embedded in the headrests is available, offering a dual-zone audio experience.

Continuing the Legacy

The Audi A5 doesn’t just replace the A4—it builds upon its legacy with enhanced features, advanced technology, and a name that signals a new chapter for Audi’s ICE vehicles. For those not ready to make the leap to electric, the A5 ensures that petrol-powered excitement isn’t going away any time soon.

The A5 range is expected to arrive in the UK by spring/summer 2025, with prices starting at around £49,400 in Germany. Full pricing, fuel economy, and options for the UK market will be announced closer to its release. Audi’s latest offering proves that the future of driving can still be thrilling, even as the automotive world continues to evolve.
